Sheri McNair and Shannon Mersand have been presenting together on how to transform learning spaces since 2014. They have presented at Tech & Learning Live NY (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), NYSCATE Hudson Valley Regional Conference (2015, 2016, 2017), Dutchess County BOCES (2015), and NYLA SSL Spring Conference (2015, 2016, 2017). This will be the 3rd Annual Makerspace Bootcamp they created and run together. The products used at the Boot Camp are also featured in Tech & Learning Magazine (Makerspace Tools Product Roundup 2016Makerspace Guide 2017).

Sheri McNair is the head of library services for her district, overseeing the library curriculum instruction grades K-12. In addition to teaching information literacy and technology integration at the high school, she also serves on the district’s technology team and the inquiry facilitation team. She has taught many technology integration/Makerspace professional development classes to teachers and fellow librarians, and has transformed her library into a 21st Century Learning Commons inclusive of a thriving Makerspace. McNair’s library has been featured several times in Tech & Learning Magazine (New & Improved LibrariesNot your Grandfather's Library3D Printing for Learning). McNair is a member of NYSCATE, NYLA/SSL, SLMSSENY, ISTE, and the Orange-Ulster Regional Library Council. She is currently the treasurer and President-Elect of SLMSSENY. She has presented at numerous venues including the NYSCATE Hudson Valley Regional Conferences, Mount Saint Mary College Conference on Literacy and ET4ALL Conference, NYS TESOL & NYSEC Conferences, SENYLRC, and the NYLA SSL Spring Conferences.
Shannon Mersand has been presenting at conferences locally, regionally and statewide since 2004. She is a technology leader and innovator who is dedicated to increasing student achievement through the use of technology and instructional design. She was named the Lee Bryant Outstanding Educator of the year in 2011 by NYSCATE. She is a School Media Specialist, an Adjunct Instructor for University of Wisconsin Stout and University at Albany (teaching courses on integrating MakerSpaces in schools and libraries), a course instructor for Creative Teacher, an Advisor for Tech & Learning Magazine (articles can be found here) and an authorized Google for Education Certified Trainer. Mersand’s MakerSpace has been featured in Tech & Learning Magazine (Making the Grade) which was also included in the 2017 Horizon Report (https://www.nmc.org/publication/nmccosn-horizon-report-2017-k-12-edition/), and 3D Printing for Learning. She is currently on sabbatical from her position at Yorktown High School, pursuing her PhD in Information Science with the intent to study the effects of makerspaces on student outcomes. Mersand is a member of NYSCATE, NYLA/SSL, SLMSSENY, and ISTE. She is currently the President for SLMSSENY. Learn 36 Products in 6 Sessions

Explore Making and Makerspaces at this 3 day immersive conference. Through six hands-on playgrounds, participants will learn about 36 different Makerspace products that are a perfect fit for Makerspaces and were not showcased last year. Playground themes will be Circuitry, Engineering & Strategy, Fabrication with Technology, Coding, Robotics, and S.A.M. (Science, Art, Math).

Participants will gain insight and understanding through six brand new informational sessions:
  • So you want to start a Makerspace? Sheri & Shannon’s Top 20 Tips, Tricks & Picks
  • Makerspaces - What the research tells us
  • What in the world is computational thinking?
  • Combining Literature & Maker Activities
  • Makerspaces as a conduit for Talent Development
  • Getting what you need: funding, loaners, online giveaways & free downloads
ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL KNOW AND BE ABLE TO:
  • Develop maker style learning experiences appropriate for students in grades PK-12
  • Design effective assessments for makerstyle learning experiences appropriate for students in grades PK-12
  • Explain current research on the effects of makerspaces and student outcomes 
  • Explain computational thinking and how it applies to Makerspaces 
  • Apply appropriate tips, tricks & top picks for designing Makerspaces to meet the needs of their library or classroom
  • Obtain funding and products through various sources
  • Make purchasing decisions regarding appropriate making and makerspace supplies and products
  • Create engaging lessons that combine literature with making 
  • Create engaging lessons that encourage talent development for all students

21 CTLE Hours!

Attendees can sign-up for one, two, or all three days. The early bird cost for SLMSSENY members is $240 for the 3-day series or $90 for an individual day. Non-member prices available. Breakfast and lunch is included each day. Early bird registration deadline is May 20, 2018 and final registration deadline is June 11th. This conference is co-sponsored with SLMSSENY.
